Overview

The Department of Community Medicine at BGS Medical College & Hospital is a centre of excellence in promoting health, fostering learning, leadership, and innovations in public health. As a para-clinical department, it prepares future community physicians equipped to function effectively in diverse public health settings.

The department emphasises competency-based, interdisciplinary education with a focus on the Indian health situation, the health care system, and community-based learning — including the Family Adoption Programme that gives MBBS students longitudinal exposure to family medicine and the social determinants of health.

Education: Delivering multifaceted interdisciplinary education through current, competency-based curricula enabling students to function as effective community physicians. Research: Enabling students to conduct and communicate collaborative research in public health. Social Sensitivity: Empowering students to be sensitive to the current health scenario and socio-cultural-behavioural and environmental issues. Team Leadership: Inculcating skills to function as effective team players, behavioural change communicators, and advocates of social change. Workforce Development: Retaining and developing future public health leaders in an inclusive, supportive learning environment.

Outreach & Programmes
Services & Programmes

The department delivers community-based learning and public health services through dedicated programmes that link the medical college with surrounding rural and urban populations.

Family Adoption Programme

MBBS students adopt families in adjoining villages for community-based learning, providing longitudinal exposure to family medicine and social determinants of health.

Health Camps & Outreach

Regular community health camps, screening drives, immunisation, and awareness programmes — including World Leprosy Day observances and scabies screening.

Public Health Programmes

Implementation of National Health Programmes including maternal/child health, family planning, and disease surveillance through partnerships with primary health care system.
