About the Department
Overview

The Department of Pharmacology at BGS Medical College & Hospital trains students in rational drug prescribing in accordance with patients' needs for treatment, prevention and diagnosis of common diseases. The department places strong emphasis on pharmacovigilance and drug prescription in children, the elderly, and pregnancy.

The curriculum is structured around 15 core competencies covering rational prescribing, drug interactions, pharmacovigilance, special-population prescribing, biomedical waste management, and contemporary medication updates — preparing students for careers in clinical practice, teaching, research, and the pharmaceutical industry.

Vision

To train students in rational drug prescribing in accordance with patients' needs for treatment, prevention and diagnosis of common diseases, with an emphasis on pharmacovigilance and drug prescription in children, the elderly, and pregnancy.

Mission

Equip students with sufficient knowledge for rational drug prescription. Train students to detect, evaluate, prevent and treat adverse drug reactions. Highlight the importance of pharmacoeconomics and essential drug concepts. Create awareness about drug effects in pregnancy, children and the elderly. Enable proficiency in pharmacotherapeutics and equip students with skills for future careers in teaching, research, and the pharmaceutical industry.

Infrastructure
Facilities & Labs

The department operates dedicated laboratory and surveillance infrastructure designed for experimental and clinical pharmacology training and pharmacovigilance.

Experimental Pharmacology Lab

Laboratory for experimental pharmacology training including drug action studies and animal experiments where indicated.

Clinical Pharmacology Lab

Clinical pharmacology facility supporting therapeutic drug monitoring, pharmacovigilance studies, and adverse drug reaction analysis.

Pharmacovigilance Unit

Active pharmacovigilance committee monitoring adverse drug reactions across all clinical departments — promoting rational drug use and patient safety.
