SDG Initiatives

Adichunchanagiri University integrates the Sustainable Development Goals into its academic, research, community and campus activities. Through its academic departments, SDG Cell, NSS, healthcare institutions, Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC), Eco Clubs and student organisations, the University promotes sustainability, social responsibility, environmental stewardship, innovation and community well-being. The University’s approach combines sustainability-oriented teaching and learning with research, community service, environmental auditing and green campus initiatives.

01 · Learn for a Sustainable Future
SDG-Oriented Curriculum Design and Delivery

Adichunchanagiri University integrates sustainability and SDG-oriented perspectives into curriculum design and academic delivery. Relevant themes, concepts and applications are incorporated into the syllabi of appropriate programmes with SDG mapping of subjects systematically reflected in the respective syllabus documents. Faculty members adopt the same orientation in teaching and learning. SDG-related perspectives are reinforced through classroom teaching, projects, seminars, workshops, field visits, internships, value-added programmes and extension activities. This approach enables students to connect disciplinary knowledge with real-world sustainability challenges and develop the knowledge, skills, values and competencies required to contribute to sustainable development.

02 · Experiential Learning
SDG-Oriented Co-curricular and Experiential Learning

ACU provides diverse platforms for students to engage with sustainability through SDG Clubs, Eco Clubs, Innovation Clubs and NSS Units. SDG Week (Global Goal Week), World Environment Day, Earth Day, Pollution Control Day, World Water Day and World Forest Day are observed annually through plantation drives, environmental awareness programmes and other sustainability activities. Hackathons, competitions, exhibitions, awareness campaigns and student projects mapped to all 17 SDGs promote experiential learning, innovation and student leadership. Healthcare and community outreach activities further connect students with real-world sustainability challenges, while workshops, skill-development programmes, sports, yoga, meditation and cultural activities support holistic student development and active participation towards the SDGs.

03 · Direct, Tangible Impact
Research — SDG Orientation and Direct, Tangible Impact

Research at ACU addresses a wide range of societal, environmental, healthcare, technological and developmental challenges. Several UG, PG and Ph.D. research projects are directly aligned with specific SDGs, while many other research activities have tangible linkages to sustainable development through their applications and outcomes. Research areas include healthcare and well-being, water and wastewater management, renewable energy, environmental protection, sustainable infrastructure, waste management, innovation and community-oriented solutions. Faculty and students undertake interdisciplinary research, innovation and technology development, with outcomes, wherever applicable, translated into practical solutions, improved practices, technologies, community applications and evidence-based interventions.

04 · Continuous Improvement
Green Energy and Environment Auditing

Adichunchanagiri University undergoes Green Energy and Environment Audits every year through external auditing agencies. The observations, recommendations and feedback received through these audits are reviewed to identify areas for improvement and guide corrective measures, resource-efficiency initiatives and enhanced environmental management practices. The audit process therefore serves as an important mechanism for continuous improvement in the University’s environmental performance and sustainable campus practices.

05 · Serve, Empower & Transform
SDG-Focused Community Engagement

ACU undertakes extensive community-oriented activities through its NSS Units, medical and nursing institutions, healthcare services and the Community Services department. These initiatives include healthcare camps, blood donation drives, wellness programmes, health and medical awareness activities, vocational training and skill-development workshops for rural youth, and awareness drives on sanitation, nutrition and sustainable agriculture. Students, faculty, healthcare professionals and staff actively participate in rural and village development, environmental programmes and other extension activities, providing opportunities for experiential learning and social responsibility. ACU also collaborates with government agencies, industries and NGOs on rural development and community-based projects. Through these sustained initiatives, the University contributes to community health and well-being, education, social inclusion, environmental awareness and inclusive rural development.

06 · Green Campus
Green Initiatives on Campus

Adichunchanagiri University is committed to developing and maintaining a green, resource-efficient and environmentally responsible campus through comprehensive sustainability initiatives. The campus promotes renewable energy through a 600 kW rooftop solar power system, 176 solar water heaters and 300 solar streetlights, along with energy-efficient lighting and other energy-conservation measures. The University implements rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, wastewater treatment and reuse for effective water management. Solid-waste segregation, responsible waste management, plastic reduction and food-waste-to-biogas conversion through a 300 kg/day biogas plant support resource recovery and circular waste management. Campus biodiversity is strengthened through extensive plantation and green spaces, with 4,585 trees representing 44 varieties.

Together, these initiatives integrate sustainability into curriculum and teaching, research, community engagement, institutional assessment and campus operations, while promoting continuous improvement and meaningful contributions towards the SDGs.
